What is Lymphoedema?

The term Lymphoedema refers to swelling of one or more regions of the body due to accumulation of excessive amounts of protein-rich fluid.

Lymphoedema is caused by a mechanical failure of the lymphatic system when the demand for the lymphatic drainage exceeds the capacity of the lymphatic circulation.

The lymphatic system is a network of vessels and nodes throughout the body that transports lymph from the body tissues back to the bloodstream. The lymphatic system helps removing waste products from the tissues, assists the immune system and maintains the volume and protein concentration of the extra-cellular fluid in the body.

This intricate system can be compromised during fetal development (Primary Lymphoedema or after surgery, trauma or injury to the lymphatic system (Secondary Lymphoedema)

In treating lymphedema, physiotherapists aim to restore the equilibrium between the load and the carrying capacity of the patient’s lymphatic system in order to reduce edema, restore limb function, and prevent further complications.
